Recruitment forum for new accountants, The Sunday Business Post, November 2006

Newly qualified chartered accountants could benefit from a global recruitment event due to take place later this month.

The Accountancy Worldwide Forum by international financial recruiter Think Global Recruitment will focus on overseas employment opportunities for newly qualified accountants in Ireland.

The event, which will take place in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin on 25th November, will have representatives from companies as far a field as Canada, the Caribbean, the Middle East and New Zealand.

It will feature presentations of between 30 and 45 minutes by companies, detailing the positions they are offering. Each company will also have a stand where candidates can meet and talk to potential employers.

"Throughout the days, clients will have stands where candidates can approach clients and talk about the opportunities. Candidates get to actually meet employers face to face and if that goes well there are opportunities on the day to interview," said Paul McCann, senior recruitment manager with Think Global Recruitment in London.

McCann said that the last Accountancy Worldwide Forum held in  London in March 2005, over 250 first and second interviews were conducted with 60 per cent of delegates receiving jobs offers as a result.

"In terms of experience, our clients tend to look for a wide range, including audit experience, transaction services, business risk, internal audit, tax and other areas, " said McCann.

"As a newly qualified chartered accountant in Dublin, you have got a lot of options from staying in Dublin to moving overseas. One thing I would say is that, by making an international move and gaining international experience, you are broadening your horizons and increasing your chances and options further down the line. It gives you than extra edge on your CV. “ he said.

Get set for an international career, Pass Magazine, August 2006

Think Global Recruitment is the leading specialist consultancy in international financial recruitment. Here are our top tips for getting a job overseas:

  • International travel is great. But don’t worry if you’ve not walked the Inca Trail or scaled the heights of Kilimanjaro. Your future employer will be looking for evidence that you can adapt to different cultures. So even if you’ve just learnt how to say ‘please’, ‘thank you’, and ‘mine’s a pint’ while in Spain, it’s a good start!
  • Networking is good. But meeting with an international recruitment consultant is better! We can give you career advice, explain the pros and cons of different locations, suggest some options that you might not have considered and sort out any concerns you have. In fact, we’re your new best friend!
  • Audit is in demand everywhere around the world . You can also gain excellent experience. To make the most of your audits, try to work with the largest companies that your Firm audits; supervise audits as early as possible; work on audits from start to sign off; if you’re looking to specialise, gain experience in the area of interest. Financial Services audits are a great way to move into more interesting roles. Internal Audit will give you the chance to travel the world – you can spend up to 100% of your time travelling to the world’s coolest cities, if you join an organisation like Coca Cola, which has operations all over the globe.
  • Working in the UK gives you a big advantage. Several accounting and legal systems around the world are based on the UK’s structure. Many of your skills are transferable, particularly if you have been working with IFRS or Sarbanes Oxley. US GAAP is also in demand around the world, as lots of companies have head offices in the US.
  • Research, research, research. It’s worth trying to get hold of the Accountancy Institute’s journal for the country that you want to move to. They contain technical updates and valuable information about trends and issues – it will really impress your interviewers if you have knowledge of these subjects. Think Global Recruitment can let you know about interesting articles from journals around the world or provide relevant website links.
  • Go on any training courses that are offered to you , particularly if they have any international angle. Remember to update your CV every time you go on a course – it can be easy to forget all the training you’ve received.
  • Language skills are a bonus, especially in Germany and France. In most countries, the work will be carried out in English, but if you want a decent social life then you’d be wise to pick up some basics. It also helps you enjoy the experience more. If you are fortunate enough to have relevant language skills, getting a job becomes much simpler.
  • Being on a Student Committee or taking an active role in a sports club is always going to be beneficial when you’re looking for an overseas role. This is particularly true in locations where the expat community revolves around team sports (and the associated ‘social’ clubs). Joining the Firm's hockey team or taking up scuba diving is guaranteed to help you settle in, so you’re much less likely to spend your time missing the Premier League and your mum.
  • Fact-find at the Accountancy Worldwide International Recruitment Forum. The Forum will take you around the world in a day. You can attend presentations by firms from overseas who want to recruit accountants, visit the exhibition to find out in- depth information about Firm and location and interview for positions that you are interested in. Previous sponsors have included BDO, Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton, KPMG, Macquarie Bank, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, PKF, Procter & Gamble and PricewaterhouseCoopers from locations such as Australia , Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Channel Islands, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, USA, Russia and the United Kingdom. The next events are in Dublin on 25 th November 2006 and London on 10 th March 2007. More details can be found at www.accountancyworldwide.com
  • Go for it! As a qualified accountant you will have an unrivalled opportunity to travel the world in style. Whether you want to experience amazing career progression, enjoy a relaxed work/life balance, discover a new lifestyle or make some serious cash, an international career move will enhance your life.Visit www.thinkgr.com to search for current opportunities, read stories from other accountants who have moved overseas, find out more about locations around the world or have a look at events happening in the UK. It’s time to ask yourself: where in the world do you want to work?
