Generous accountants dig deep to raise money for charity , Scottishjobs.com, October 2007

Generous accountants in Edinburgh are shaking off their alleged penny pinching image to raise money for a Kenyan charity, Ribban Children’s Trust, at the first ever Chartered Accountants’ Ball hosted by Think Global Recruitment. The event is being held at Edinburgh Castle on Saturday 3 rd November.

Ribban Children’s Trust supports two primary schools in a remote farming community in the Rift Valley in Kenya. Money raised at the Ball will provide the children with essential items such as text books, stationery, furniture and calculators - for those wishing to follow in the accountants’ footsteps! It will also help to build new classrooms and gardens.

Val Greaves, the Edinburgh patron of Ribban Children’s Trust, said, “We established Ribban in October 2006 to help two impoverished rural schools in Kenya to provide an environment where children could feel valued and motivated to learn.

"Due to generous donations and sponsorship here in Edinburgh we have built four permanent classrooms in each school and the pass rates in the classes are already showing improvement. At last the 500 children that we are helping can have expectations of a better life!”

Abigail Stevens , managing director of Think Global Recruitment, hosts of the Chartered Accountants’ Ball, said “People like to support good causes and what better way to do than at Edinburgh’s most amazing venue!

"Think Global Recruitment are committed to supporting Ribban Children’s Trust and have hosted a number of events which have raised just under £3,000 for the charity this year to date. The generosity shown by those who have attended the events has been phenomenal.

"It’s exciting to know that in supporting Ribban we are having a profound influence on the lives of children attending these schools now - and those who will attend these schools in years to come. Who knows, they could end up becoming accountants too!”

Travel counts as top goal, MX Newspaper, October 2007

The trend for young Australian accounts to live and work overseas is stronger than ever, with a new survey revealing that nearly half of all accountants aged 21 – 30 intend to travel overseas in the next 2 years.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants’ survey shows 43 per cent of 680 studying accountants intend to use their qualifications overseas.

Think Global Recruitment founder and managing director, Abigail Stevens - a global accounting and finance recruitment specialist – confirms Australian accounting professionals are sought worldwide. “It’s because the qualification is hard to get through, which means if the person has passed, they have been stringently tested,” Stevens said.

Recently, Think Global Recruitment hosted its Accountancy Worldwide International Recruitment Forum for the first time in Sydney. The two day event gives new CAs the chance to attend presentations, visit exhibitions and talk to the world’s top accounting companies.

“The interviewing is like speed dating,” Stevens said, “It’s a 30 minute meeting with each candidate and at the end, the company will decide who they want to offer a job. “The Sydney Forum…had a rep frm the Cayman Islands who met 12 candidates and made 10 offers,” she said.

Melbourne CA Paul Best moved to Australia from the UK two years ago after attending London’s Accountancy Worldwide International Forum. “There were about 20 employers from the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, America, Canada and Australian reps from PWC, EY, KPMG,” he said.

“It’s as if employers were selling themselves to us instead of the other way round." Best landed a job with PWC and hasn’t looked back. “The Forum is a great way for employers to get a choice of candidates and for candidates to get a fair chance at landing a job in a short space of time.”

Accountants Move Overseas For Career Development, Careerjunction.co.za, May 2007

According to a recently commissioned survey by Think Global Recruitment of more than 100 finance professionals living abroad, young accountants are increasingly moving overseas to develop their careers...Forty–seven percent stated that the main reason for relocating abroad was career development. Interestingly, this is a departure from the results of the survey in 2006, which found that motivations such as financial gains and an improved quality of life were more important factors in their decision.

Sumaya Amra, a chartered accountant from Gauteng, relocated to the UK in August 2006. Think Global Recruitment assisted her to secure a position with one of the world's leading banks. She explains what she has achieved from an international move. "Time away from home broadens your perspective and you learn about yourself, becoming more self reliant and independent - skills that are great personally as well as professionally. It will improve your soft skills, your presentation skills, your ability to understand and manage senior stakeholders, as well as your organisational and communication skills."

Sumaya is committed to using her new skills to develop her career back in South Africa. "I'm definitely coming home; I still think there's no place like South Africa in terms of sheer natural beauty and the uniqueness of our culture. It's also a powerhouse in Africa and I think the country has definitely got amazing potential".

Accountants in South Africa can learn about career opportunities overseas at the Accountancy Worldwide International Recruitment Forum, which is taking place on Saturday 19th May at the Hilton Sandton Hotel in Johannesburg.

At the Accountancy Worldwide Forum accountants can attend presentations by the world's leading firms, visit the Worldwide Opportunities exhibition to find out about accounting jobs overseas and schedule interviews with potential employers – all in one day, under one roof!

Accountancy Worldwide happens in London, Dublin and Sydney each year. This is the first year that it will take place in South Africa. Think Global Recruitment's managing director, Abigail Stevens, said, "Out of all the world's key cities, we chose to host Accountancy Worldwide in Johannesburg as the South African qualification means accountants have the opportunity to relocate anywhere in the world. The Forum provides accountants with a chance to meet potential employers, understand how they would fit in to different cultures and whether the lifestyle and career development opportunities are right for them. They can then make an informed decision having considered all possibilities."

"Accountancy firms such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte increasingly see international experience as an essential quality when promoting people into senior positions. Many of the accountants we assist to find roles overseas gain promotions that they may not have achieved at home."
